Five essential trash management tips for short-term rental hosts

Keeping your short-term rental property clean, compliant, and guest-ready goes beyond spotless interiors and fresh linens – it starts at the curb. In a recent episode of Host Planet Bitesize – powered by HostfullyAlex Shapiro, CEO and Co-Founder of CanMonkey, shared five game-changing waste management tips for vacation rental hosts. These tips can help you protect your reputation, keep guests happy, and avoid costly fines. Catch the full episode on our website, YouTube, Spotify, or Apple.

Whether you're managing one property or scaling a portfolio, here’s what you need to know about managing trash the smart way.

1. Know your local trash schedule

It sounds simple, but many hosts overlook this. If bins aren’t taken out on the correct day, they overflow – causing smells, attracting pests, and leaving a bad first impression on guests. Worse, if you’re in a homeowners' association or regulated area, violations could cost you your short-term rental license. Alex’s advice: "Always know your neighbourhood’s trash and recycling pickup days – and stick to them."

2. Label your bins clearly

Bins get mixed up, especially in dense neighbourhoods or when you manage multiple properties. Avoid confusion by labelling your bins with property numbers or branded stickers. In areas like the UK, where bin colours vary by region, it’s also crucial to make it clear which waste goes where. A simple label can save you from messy mistakes and neighbour complaints.

3. Invest in extra trash cans

Most homes are issued one bin for general waste and one for recycling – but that’s rarely enough for a busy short-term rental. “If your property sleeps 8-12 people, don’t rely on just one trash can,” Alex warns. He recommends checking with your city or waste provider about ordering extra bins. If that’s not possible, a sturdy backup bin in the garage can help – but ensure it’s actually serviced.

4. Have a local junk hauler on speed dial

Even with planning, trash emergencies happen – especially with tight turnover times. Guests leave on Sunday, trash day isn’t until Thursday, and suddenly you’re left with bags piling up. Alex suggests lining up a local junk removal company for quick call-outs. Better yet, negotiate a discounted rate in advance for regular use.

5. Outsource bin duty with a ‘can-to-curb’ service

This is where CanMonkey shines. Their "can-to-curb" service takes bins out the night before collection and returns them after pickup – automatically. “We take the most annoying weekly chore off your plate,” says Alex. Their dashboard even gives hosts visibility into every service, which is helpful when guests claim bins were full or missing. The peace of mind is well worth the cost.

Be a good neighbour

In short-term rentals, your reputation with neighbours matters as much as your reviews. Overflowing trash, uncollected bins, or noisy pickups can strain relationships and jeopardise your ability to operate legally. Some CanMonkey clients even pay for the service at neighbouring properties to maintain good will.

Final thoughts on trash management

Waste management may not be glamorous, but it’s essential to running a smooth, scalable, and guest-friendly STR business. Whether it’s mastering the schedule, investing in extra bins, or outsourcing with CanMonkey, small steps can make a big difference.
